If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms indicative of dementia, it's important to consult a doctor as soon as possible. Dementia is a progressive neurological condition that affects cognitive functions like memory, thinking, and reasoning. Early detection and diagnosis can be crucial for managing the condition effectively and planning for the future.
According to Dr. Jared Benge, who is a neuropsychologist with UT Health Comprehensive Memory Center (CMC) the first step is a visit to the Primary Care Physician. who may refer you to a specialist, such as a neurologist or geriatrician, who has expertise in diagnosing and managing dementia.
Early diagnosis allows for early intervention, including medication, lifestyle changes, and support services that may help manage symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
What are the wait times to see a specialist? Unfortunately, there are not many professionals who specialize in dementia and therefore wait times for appointments can be 6-7 months or more.
Hints from Dr. Benge
Make an appointment with your Primary Care Physician as soon as possible to conduct labs and tests to rule out other diagnoses that mimic dementia like UTIs, Thyroid/B12 deficiencies, anxiety and depression, and/or vision/hearing problems.
If referred to a neurologist, call for an appointment as soon as possible. When making the appointment, ask the office if there are any exams, tests, imaging, or labs that may be done prior to the appointment.
Ask to be placed on a waiting list. They will contact you if they have cancellations.
How do I convince my loved one to see the physician? If your loved one doesn't normally go to the doctor and isn't showing symptoms to indicate an illness, it may be difficult to take him/her to the office.
Hints from Dr. Benge
Health insurance companies and/or Medicare require annual wellness checkups which is a good reason to make a visit.
Make the appointment part of an outing for the day which can include shopping and lunch after the appointment.
